November is when we know winter has arrived. A nice day comes at the price of frosty morning. The leaves are nearly all gone and darkness falls early. So cheer yourself up by getting out in the garden and getting close to the soil. Here are key garden jobs in November:
1. Leaf Clearance and Mulching
Fallen leaves will smother lawns and beds, so rake them up and compost them. Once they have composted they can be used as leaf mould, which is a valuable soil improver. Spread well-rotted leaf mould or compost on your flowerbeds and borders as a mulch to protect plant roots from frost and improve soil quality.
2. Planting Spring Bulbs
November is the last chance to plant spring-flowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and crocuses. Ensure they are planted at the correct depth in well-drained soil. Bulbs add a vibrant splash of colour to the garden after winter and announce the arrival of spring.
3. Pruning and Cutting Back
Prune roses and other perennials that have finished flowering. This is a chance to both reshape the plants and help them resist winter storms. Leave seed heads that appear to provide food for birds and shelter for insects.
4. Protecting Delicate Plants
Tender plants like dahlias should be lifted, dried, and stored in a frost-free place. Alternatively, insulate them with mulch or fleece if left in the ground. Wrap vulnerable shrubs, such as young olive trees, in horticultural fleece to protect them from frost.
5. General Maintenance
Fences, trellises, and other garden structures will be free of creepers and climbing plants now. Carry out any repairs whilst you have access. If you do have to cut back, spring growth is only a few months away. Anything that is creaking now will only get worse during the winter. Fix it now before winter weather causes more damage. Clean and store garden tools, pots, and furniture. Ensure water butts are securely covered and guttering is clear of debris to avoid blockages.
6. Lawn Care
It’s essential to keep the lawn free of leaves. Aerate compacted areas and apply an autumn lawn feed to strengthen grass over winter.
7. Wildlife Support
You aren’t the only life in the garden. Install bird feeders and clean birdbaths to support local wildlife. Piles of logs or leaves can serve as winter habitats for hedgehogs and insects.
